Prep: 10 minutesCook: 15 minutesTotal: 25 minutes

Story

The sound of sizzling plantains filled Don Luis’ kitchen as he carefully pressed each slice into golden, crispy perfection. 🍌🔥 “Tostones,” he said, “are the ultimate snack—crunchy, salty, and perfect with a good dipping sauce.” Today, we’re pairing them with a zesty Salsa Verde, bringing a fresh and vibrant twist to this Caribbean classic. 🌿✨

Ingredients

  • For the Tostones:
  • 2 large green plantains
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • For the Salsa Verde:
  • 3 tomatillos, husked and rinsed
  • 1 jalapeño (remove seeds for less spice)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 0.25 cup fresh cilantro
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. 11️⃣ Make the Salsa Verde – In a blender, combine tomatillos, jalapeño, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and salt. Blend until smooth and set aside. 🍋🌿🔥
  2. 22️⃣ Peel & Slice the Plantains – Cut off both ends and carefully peel the green plantains. Slice into 1-inch thick rounds. 🍌🔪
  3. 33️⃣ First Fry – Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry plantain slices for 2-3 minutes per side, until slightly golden but not crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels. 🛢️🔥
  4. 44️⃣ Smash & Fry Again – Using a tostonera or the bottom of a cup, gently press each plantain round to flatten it. Fry again for 1-2 minutes per side until crispy and golden brown. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder. 🍌🧂🔥
  5. 55️⃣ Serve & Enjoy – Dip into homemade Salsa Verde for a fresh, zesty contrast. 🌿✨
